The Black Child Down Syndrome project (BCDS) is an initiative dedicated to empowering children with Down syndrome, particularly within Black communities. Through the power of images and storytelling, we are redefining what Down syndrome looks like, amplifying representation, and inspiring action.
“Black Child, Down Syndrome: Unveiling the Unseen, Defying Expectations, Embracing Grace” is a multifaceted project aimed at challenging stereotypes, celebrating diversity, and fostering greater inclusivity for black children with Down syndrome.
Through photography, storytelling, and community engagement, this project seeks to illuminate the beauty, resilience and humanity of individuals often marginalised by society.
Objectives include creating an immersive exhibition space inviting visitors to explore the intersectionality of race and disability, reflecting on the the stories and experiences of featured individuals; fostering empathy, understanding, and appreciation for the resilience and beauty of black children with Down syndrome and their families.
By sharing these personal narratives, the campaign seeks to raise awareness about the intersectionality of race and disability, shedding light, increasing the understanding and awareness of the unique experiences faced by black families raising children with Down syndrome.
The event will include a brief promotional segment for the photography exhibition, inviting the public and attendees to further engage with and support the project.
